Scaffolded and tailored to meet your needs, strengths, challenges and capabilities, you will discover how to harness the power of rhythm to express yourself creatively through a range of transformative and engaging play-based activities, including:
Body percussion – Explore and create sounds and rhythms on your body; learn dynamic body beats that you can show off to your friends and family; integrate movement/dance steps into body percussion routines; fun rhythm-based brain-hacking activities.
Drumming – Learn basic techniques and rhythms on djembes and a range of other percussion instruments; call/response activities; learn traditional and African inspired rhythms; develop therapeutic rhythmic techniques for self-regulation and healing; free-form jamming and creating rhythms together.
Vocal exploration – Uplifting mnemonics embedded in rhythms to help you remember them (also providing positive, empowering affirmations); add vocal expression to body percussion; learn/create simple rhythmic chants or songs.
Combining/Synthesising – Feel a sense of accomplishment as we build on and combine material each week to create a final piece that can be performed or simply played for fun!
If only some of these activities tickle your fancy, that's fine! Classes are flexible and participant-centred, so you can choose to focus on those you'll enjoy and benefit from most. Your teacher

Hi! I'm Liv from The Joy Dispensary!
I'm an Arts-Health facilitator in a range of creative modalities, including music, drumming, singing, body percussion, dance/movement, and intentional play! Delivering sessions in both group and private one-on-one settings, my clients include people from the general public, those with diverse abilities, mental health challenges and complex needs, aged care residents, schools, community groups and corporate teams. I'm also an educator/researcher in Music Psychology at University of Queensland, particularly focused on the impacts of active music participation on wellbeing and human flourishing.
Since the age of three I have explored the joys of dance, singing, acting and music-making, working professionally as a performing artist within Australia and internationally. I'm passionate about the profound benefits of incorporating multi-arts to enhance health and wellbeing, and am dedicated to sharing these with people of all ages and capabilities.
Co-owner of The Joy Dispensary, along with Zac Callaghan, we offer interactive performances and transformative multi-arts programs/workshops in a diverse range of settings, including schools, corporate, private and community events, and festivals. In an exciting project, funded by Arts Queensland, we are currently designing and delivering our new Own Your Beat Multi-Arts Programs, and conducting research on the wellbeing outcomes for four target sectors: Diverse abilities, Aged Care, Youth At-Risk, and Mental Health. In addition, we're further developing our facilitator training program to enable health practitioners and other industry professionals to implement creative approaches into their work.
We are also the creators of Oom-Pah! The ultimate fast-paced card game for music nerds and legends... or those who wanna be! Utilising groundbreaking research in neuroscience, this game is designed to help people learn and practice music theory in a fun, interactive way, and our ultimate goal is for Oom-Pah! to be included in school curriculums around the world.
After many years of hands-on experience working with people with a diverse range of backgrounds and capacities, my mission is to help empower individuals to improve confidence, self-esteem and socio-emotional skills, overcome perceived limitations, and foster social cohesion. My work also aims to increase physical and cognitive abilities, encourage joyful and positive outlooks, relieve stress and anxiety, and assist in enriching individuals' quality of life.
