What you'll do

Looking to delve into a fun woodworking class in Sydney? Join us at our workshop in Marrickville for an engaging experience where kids and parents or guardians can learn new skills together. In our classes, you'll explore timber, sustainability, and gain confidence in using hand tools.

Engage in a 4-hour noughts and crosses course or a timber toy car making course, perfect for ages 8-12.
Consider organizing a group session for homeschooling groups – just reach out to us to arrange!

Throughout our classes, you will work with various timber types, appreciate the value of recycled materials, and leave with newfound woodworking skills and a handmade creation to showcase. Immerse yourself in our supportive environment and discover the joy of woodworking with your child.

Please note: Public dates for this class require at least 7 guests to run. In the unlikely event that we don't reach this number, we'll cancel the class; in this case we'll inform you and allow you to get a refund or reschedule, so please watch your email/SMS one day prior to the class.

Knowledge required

This course is for people with little to no experience with woodwork looking for an introduction to the craft. We have designed this course with kids in mind, and it is open to kids of all skill levels, including those who have never done woodwork before.

What you'll get

An appreciation of the value of second-hand timber
The knowledge to safely and effectively use some simple hand tools under supervision
Been introduced to a range of woodworking terminology
Used a number of woodworking devices and jigs
Made your own timber project together

What to bring

You are encouraged to bring your own facemask, protective eyewear and ear protection however sanitised Personal Protective Equipment will be available to use. Any borrowed PPE needs to be sanitised after use
You are required to wear closed-toe shoes
Aprons will be provided but please wear clothing that can get dirty (e.g. sawdust or glue)
Long hair needs to be tied back and no loose hanging jewellery should be worn
For your own safety, facilitator instructions regarding the correct use of tools and equipment must be followed at all times

An adult must accompany any attending kids. The adult may observe at the class for free.

Among the Trees is an ethical and sustainability based start-up for reclaimed timber located in Marrickville.

Saving timber from demolitions or other discarded uses and making it available to the public through a retail timber shop and woodworking classes. Accessibility to wood doesn't just mean being wheelchair friendly (which we are), it also means helping customers understand how to use and source reclaimed timber. To make it as easy as possible to work with, we offer custom machining and glueing, so the timber in our store can be squared, resurfaced and cut to specific dimensions. We also help empower individuals to have the confidence to undertake woodworking projects by offering woodworking beginners classes that are taught with simple hand tools.

Lumberyards and wood workshops can be intimidating sometimes, ATT is one of the few places that caters not only to architects, planners, homeowners as well as carpenters and tradespeople but also to customers that have little to no woodworking experience and are embarking on DIY and student projects or trying their hand at repair, renovating or building.

Our workshop at Among The Trees is set up to be the perfect space to learn about hand tools, reclaimed timber, and woodworking. We’ve been hard at work collecting, restoring and tuning all the tools required to learn woodworking, and a few extra ones as well.

All-in-all, everyone that is interested in wood is welcome!
